Let's answer the question almost everyone asks before booking their first appointment:
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Honestly, nothing hurts that bad.
Most of my clients are so relieved and surprised after their first appointment because laser hair removal hurts so much less than what they were imagining and what their anxiety was causing them to believe.
The word laser makes the treatment sound intense, scary, and extremely painful.
In reality, it really is not.
Most treatment areas are very, very comfortable. Clients regularly finish their first appointment and say:
"Wait, that was it?"
The anticipation is almost always worse than the actual treatment.
At Pink Diamond Laser, I use the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus along with a separate Freddo cold-air cooling device to help keep the skin comfortable throughout treatment.
The result is an effective, quick, and surprisingly tolerable appointment that gets you one step closer to being Smooth AF.
What Does Laser Hair Removal Feel Like?
Most clients describe laser hair removal as a quick, warm snap against the skin.
You feel each pulse for a fraction of a second, and then it is gone.
Some people compare it to:
- A tiny rubber band snap
- A quick warm flick
- A brief pinprick
- A small burst of heat
- A sensation that is much easier than expected
The sensation is not constant or lingering.
The laser delivers a quick pulse, the Freddo cooling device continuously blows cold air over the treatment area, and then we move on to the next spot.
Most clients can comfortably talk throughout their entire appointment.
Once they experience the first few pulses, their anxiety usually disappears because they realize there was nothing to be afraid of.
Why Does the Word "Laser" Sound So Scary?
The word "laser" makes people imagine something much more intense than the actual treatment.
Many clients walk into Pink Diamond Laser nervous, tense, and preparing themselves for a painful experience.
Then I perform the first few pulses, and you can immediately see the relief on their faces.
It hurts so much less than what their anxiety caused them to believe.
Laser hair removal does not have to feel scary. With the right equipment, a strong cooling device, and an experienced laser nurse performing your treatment, the experience can be quick, comfortable, and surprisingly easy.
Come in nervous. Leave relieved and Smooth AF.
Which Areas Are Most Sensitive During Laser Hair Removal?
Because I do not want to lie to you and pretend that every single pulse feels exactly the same, there are a couple of very small areas that can feel slightly more sensitive.
Even those areas are extremely tolerable and take only seconds to treat.
The Small Area Above the Clitoral Region
The most sensitive spot is usually a very small, approximately quarter-sized section in the middle front portion of the bikini area, toward the upper clitoral region.
That specific spot can feel slightly more noticeable because it is a naturally sensitive area.
However, it literally takes about two seconds to treat.
By the time you register that it feels a little stronger, I am already finished with that section.
The rest of the Brazilian treatment is generally extremely comfortable.
Ankles and Shins
The other areas that can feel slightly more noticeable are around the ankles and shins.
There is less muscle and soft tissue cushioning the skin in these areas, so the laser may feel a little sharper over the bone.
Even then, it is still extremely tolerable.
It feels like a series of quick snaps rather than anything severe, unbearable, or long-lasting.
Which Areas Are Surprisingly Painless?
The areas clients are usually the most nervous about often end up being some of the most comfortable.
Labia
A lot of clients assume the labia will be the most painful part of Brazilian laser hair removal.
Surprisingly, the labia are usually extremely comfortable to treat and much less sensitive during laser than people imagine.
Clients frequently brace themselves expecting it to hurt, only to realize that they can barely feel anything.
Butt Line
The butt line is another area people assume will be painful or highly sensitive.
In reality, it is usually very comfortable and takes only a few moments to treat.
The labia and butt line are perfect examples of how anxiety can make laser hair removal sound much worse in your head than it feels in real life.
Does Brazilian Laser Hair Removal Hurt?
Brazilian laser hair removal is nowhere near as painful as most clients expect.
Aside from that tiny quarter-sized section toward the upper clitoral area, which takes approximately two seconds to treat, the rest of the Brazilian area is generally very comfortable.
The labia and butt line are surprisingly painless, even though those are often the exact areas clients are most worried about.
The treatment is also extremely fast.
At Pink Diamond Laser, a Brazilian laser hair removal appointment can often be completed in under 10 minutes.
You may walk into your appointment nervous, but there is a very good chance you will leave wondering why you waited so long to book.
Less shaving, fewer ingrown hairs, less irritation, and more time being Smooth AF.
Does Underarm Laser Hair Removal Hurt?
Underarm laser hair removal may feel like a few quick snaps because underarm hair is often dark, dense, and coarse.
However, the underarms are a very small area.
The actual treatment can usually be completed in less than five minutes.
Many first-time laser clients choose to begin with their underarms because the appointment is so fast and easy.
Underarm laser hair removal is especially popular for clients who experience:
- Razor burn
- Ingrown hairs
- Dark shadows after shaving
- Irritation
- Hair that grows back almost immediately
- Frequent shaving
Five minutes of quick laser pulses in exchange for less shaving and smoother underarms?
That is an easy decision.
Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt on the Face?
Facial laser hair removal can feel slightly more noticeable around the upper lip, chin, jawline, and hairline.
The upper lip is usually the most sensitive facial area, but it only takes a few moments to treat.
Coarse chin or jawline hair may also create a stronger snapping sensation because darker, thicker hair absorbs more of the laser's energy.
Even then, facial laser hair removal is still extremely tolerable.
Your laser settings should always be selected according to your skin tone, hair characteristics, treatment area, and individual response.
Laser hair removal should never be treated as a one-setting-fits-all service.
Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt on the Legs?
Most clients find laser hair removal on the legs very comfortable.
The thighs and fleshier parts of the legs are generally mild and easy to tolerate.
The shins, ankles, and knees may feel slightly more noticeable because there is less muscle and soft tissue between the skin and bone.
Even those areas are still very manageable.
At Pink Diamond Laser, full legs can often be treated in approximately 20 minutes using the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus.
Twenty minutes now can save you countless hours of shaving in the future.
Does Waxing Hurt More Than Laser Hair Removal?
Yes.
Based on my personal experience treating clients at Pink Diamond Laser, 100% of my clients who have previously waxed have said that waxing hurts way more than laser hair removal.
Not most of them.
Every single client who has tried both and compared the two has told me that waxing was more painful.
Waxing pulls an entire section of hair out from the root while also pulling on the surrounding skin.
Then you have to repeat that process over and over again throughout the appointment.
Laser hair removal feels like a series of extremely quick pulses while the Freddo cooling device continuously blows cold air over the treatment area.
There is:
- No wax strip being ripped away
- No sticky wax residue
- No need to grow your hair out
- No long, painful pulling sensation
You shave before your appointment, complete your treatment, and continue with your day.
If you have already survived a Brazilian wax, laser hair removal will probably feel like a breeze.
How Does the Freddo Cooling Device Make Laser More Comfortable?
At Pink Diamond Laser, I use the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus to perform laser hair removal treatments.
I pair the laser with a separate Freddo cold-air cooling device to keep the skin comfortable throughout the appointment.
The Freddo delivers a continuous stream of extremely cold air directly onto the treatment area before, during, and after the laser pulses.
This helps cool and soothe the surface of the skin while the laser targets the hair follicle underneath.
The cold air makes a huge difference in how the treatment feels.
You may feel a quick warm snap from the laser, but the continuous cold air helps calm the sensation immediately.
Effective laser technology plus powerful cold-air cooling means you can get Smooth AF without suffering for it.
Does the First Laser Hair Removal Session Hurt the Most?
For some clients, the first appointment feels the most noticeable because the hair is still thick and dense.
It is also a completely new sensation.
The first couple of pulses may catch you off guard simply because you do not know what to expect.
Once you realize how quick and tolerable it is, the rest of the appointment usually becomes much easier.
As your treatment series progresses, less hair may grow back, and the remaining hair may become finer.
Many clients report that their appointments become even easier as their treatment series continues.

My goal is to help you feel safe, comfortable, and confident throughout the entire experience.
I am here to get you Smooth AF, not traumatized.
How to Make Laser Hair Removal More Comfortable
Proper preparation can help make your appointment even safer, faster, and more comfortable.
Shave Before Your Appointment
Shave the treatment area approximately 24 hours before your session unless your laser provider gives you different instructions.
The laser needs to target the hair follicle underneath the skin.
Long hair sitting above the skin can absorb extra energy and make the treatment feel warmer.
Do Not Wax, Tweeze, or Thread
Do not remove the hair from the root before your laser hair removal appointment.
The follicle needs to remain in place for the laser to target it effectively.
You may shave between appointments, but do not wax, tweeze, thread, or epilate the treatment area.
Avoid Tanning and Excessive Sun Exposure
Avoid tanning beds, spray tans, self-tanner, and significant sun exposure before your treatment.
Tell your laser provider about any recent sun exposure before treatment begins.
Arrive With Clean Skin
Do not apply lotion, oil, deodorant, perfume, makeup, or other products to the treatment area before your appointment.
Clean skin allows the treatment to be performed more safely and efficiently.
Tell Your Provider About Medications
Certain medications and skincare products may make your skin more sensitive to light.
Tell your provider about:
- Prescription medications
- Antibiotics
- Retinoids
- Exfoliating acids
- Active skincare products
- Recent medication changes
- Recent medical changes
Do Not Apply Numbing Cream Unless Instructed
Do not apply numbing cream over a large treatment area unless a medical provider has specifically instructed you to do so.
Most Pink Diamond Laser clients do not need numbing cream.
Treatments are fast, and the Freddo cold-air cooling device helps keep the experience extremely tolerable.
Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt Afterward?
Most clients do not experience significant pain after laser hair removal.
The skin may temporarily look slightly pink, feel warm, or develop small bumps around the treated follicles.
This can resemble a mild sunburn and usually settles relatively quickly.
After your treatment:
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours
- Avoid saunas and hot tubs
- Avoid very hot showers
- Avoid scrubs and exfoliating products
- Avoid irritating skincare ingredients
- Protect the treated area from sun exposure
- Follow the aftercare instructions provided by your nurse
Severe pain, blistering, or a worsening skin reaction is not considered a typical response and should be reported to your provider.
Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Hair Removal Pain
Can I Get Laser Hair Removal if I Have a Low Pain Tolerance?
Yes.
Many clients who describe themselves as extremely sensitive tolerate laser hair removal very well.
Tell your nurse before treatment so we can explain the process, check in with you, and help you feel comfortable.
Does Thick Hair Make Laser Hair Removal Hurt More?
Dark, coarse, and densely packed hair may create a stronger sensation because it absorbs more laser energy.
The sensation is still extremely quick and manageable.
Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt More Every Session?
Usually not.
Many clients feel that their treatments become easier as the hair grows back thinner, softer, and less densely.
Is Brazilian Laser Hair Removal Awkward?
It is completely normal to feel nervous before your first Brazilian laser hair removal appointment.
You will be treated professionally and respectfully in a private environment.
For your laser nurse, it is simply another treatment area.
I promise you are not going to shock us.
Are the Labia Painful to Laser?
Surprisingly, no.
In my experience, the labia are usually one of the most comfortable parts of a Brazilian treatment.
Many clients expect that area to hurt the most and are shocked by how little they feel.
Does the Butt Line Hurt During Laser Hair Removal?
The butt line is also usually very comfortable.
It takes only a few moments to treat and is far less sensitive during laser hair removal than most clients imagine.
Is Laser Hair Removal Completely Painless?
Most treatment areas are very, very comfortable.
However, everyone has a different pain tolerance, and certain small areas may feel slightly more noticeable.
It is more honest to say that laser hair removal is extremely tolerable than to promise that every single person will feel absolutely nothing.
Is Laser Hair Removal Worth the Temporary Sensation?
For clients who are tired of shaving, waxing, razor burn, stubble, and ingrown hairs, the answer is usually yes.
Each laser pulse lasts only a fraction of a second.
The confidence and convenience of smoother skin can last much longer.
